How to import my products into the US?
PLANNING AND PREPARATION PHASE
Transportation options: To import your products to the United States, you have two options. (1) You can ship your products via courier, which is recommended for small shipments, especially if they do not exceed $800, as no import taxes are paid below that value. This mode of transportation typically has transit times between 3-7 days but comes with a higher cost. (2) You can ship your products via air, land, or sea, either through less-than-container-load (LCL) or full-container-load (FCL) shipments. These transportation modes have a lower cost per kilogram and are ideal for companies with volume to send palletized cargo. You can calculate the transportation cost using our calculator.
Importer registration: To import products to the United States under the second option mentioned above, you need to be registered as an importer in the United States. However, this does not imply that you or your company need to have a legal entity in the United States. If your company has a subsidiary in the United States and is not yet registered as an importer, we offer Customs Registration services. For individuals or companies without a legal entity, we also offer the service of registering them as a Foreign Importer of Record with Customs to obtain an Importer Number (CAN: Customs Assigned Number).
Bond: Some importers will need to acquire a bond with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which essentially serves as a guarantee that you or your company will fulfill your obligations in paying import duties. There are two options: a single-entry bond or an annual continuous bond for multiple imports. Among our services, we offer the sale of bonds at competitive prices. Our representatives can help you determine if you or your company will need a bond, depending on the expected import values and the type of product.
Product Analysis: One of the first steps a seller who wishes to launch their products in the United States must take is to analyze the import requirements. We offer a risk analysis service in which (1) we classify the product to obtain the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code, and (2) based on the HTS code, we determine the import requirements for the product, such as licenses, testing, and registrations required in the United States, such as FDA regulations for food products.
Licenses, registrations, testing: We provide label validation services and FDA registration. We act as your "FSVP" representative before this entity. Additionally, we have agreements with laboratories to conduct tests on your products and obtain the necessary certifications to comply with U.S. standards.
EXECUTION PHASE
Transportation Modes: Depending on the size and weight of your shipment, the time you have to have your inventory in the United States, the origin and destinations, the optimal mode of transportation that best suits your needs will be determined. Our experts will guide you through this process.
Documentation: To import products to the United States, you will need a proforma invoice, a packing list, and optionally, a certificate of origin. Additionally, you will need to have the required certificates and registrations for your products. From our platform, you can download the formats of these documents for the preparation of your shipments.
Shipment Execution: In our platform, you can make transportation reservations/bookings and upload the required documentation for the shipment. Our representatives will review the documentation before collecting the cargo to avoid delays and issues at the destination. For shipments of products that require compliance with FDA requirements, we offer the "prior notice" service to notify customs before the product arrives at the port of entry, thus minimizing delays in the customs clearance process.
